When it comes to the world of music, there is a Manteca store that has become an institution in the Valley. George Janis grew up with music and the melodies and lyrics flow into his veins.
Don's passion for music doesn't stop in the classroom, he spends the summer weekends doing music workshops in the US and travelling abroad. To show off his natural skills, Janis is said to have received lessons and played in a number of bands, including the New York Philharmonic, the San Francisco Symphony and the Los Angeles Symphony. He appreciates good food and good company and enjoys the atmosphere in which musicians meet to make music.
This is probably not the recording Charlie Parker will remember best, but you can hear a recording of an alternative recording of Okiedoke. Here is a number that was played at the annual concert of the New York Philharmonic in the late 1960s and early 1970s. A microfilm reader and printer are provided, including a copy of the original recording and a full-color copy with a black-and-white image. After years of working on the street, the couple decided in 1962 to settle down and choose Manteca to open a business that is still thriving almost 50 years later. George Janis said his own passion for the performing arts began when he first made it at the age of 12 at his father's music store in Tracy. After the boys grew up, they were invited to join their father in a family group called Continentals, which was later renamed California Colours. Together with his brother Tim he opened a second "Janis Music" store in Tracy and in 1963 the first "Manteca" store in San Francisco.
In the late 1940s, saxophonist Charlie Parker experimented with Latin American influences and recorded a series of songs with Machito, including "Chano, Chano" and "Manteca" - a tribute to his friend and mentor Pozo. His reputation grew through the compositions he wrote for Carnival, culminating in the release of his first solo album, "Carnival in Manteca." Gillespie said: "Although I let him go as far as he wanted, it wasn't strictly Afro-Cuban.
He said: "I started playing a riff on the guitar and decided to make a blues out of it and I'm a big fan of blues and blues music.
During Bauza's time at Webb's, he met fellow trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and brought Ella Fitzgerald into the band. Apparently, Gillespie asked a Cuban drummer for a recommendation for his big band in 1947, and he was offered it. He was hired by Gillespie's friend and saxophonist John Coltrane, who was a friend of Webb.
In 1941 Bauza became part of a band led by his brother-in-law Machito at the Los Angeles Jazz Club, a popular jazz club in San Francisco, California.
His family moved to Worthington, California, where he began his musical education at the age of 12 and played in the Worthingston Public Schools Band and Orchestra. When the California heat called, Don answered and received his master of music from the University of the Pacific in Stockton.
The eatery is the second location of Price the Winery, which is located 0.8 miles in the middle of Sunnyvale. It is a small restaurant and wine bar located on the corner of Main Street and San Pablo Avenue, just a few blocks from Sunnyside Shopping Center.
At the Empire Event Center, you can listen to R.B. Harlow's Restaurant Night, which took place in the banquet hall. The Avalon Night Club plays the usual music, but there is much more. The Empire Event Center will have a lot more music at the end of the evening than Harlows' Restaurant Night.
